XO Condominiums

XO Condominiums is a two tower development project going up on 1712 South Prairie Avenue in Chicago.  Kargil Development is the driving force behind this project with well known architect Lucien LaGrange as the designer.  The estimated completion date for XO is sometime in 2010, with this lengthy construction phase hinting at the scope of the project.

XO will be a totally unique pair of buildings in the South Loop and even perhaps in all of Chicago.  The area surrounding XO has been in a growth spurt for several years and is attracting new people, new businesses and a good variety of restaurants and retailers.  It is just an overall good place to live in Chicago and already has a number of handsomely constructed condominiums.  But XO is certain to stand out for a long time even in this constantly changing and evolving neighborhood and it very well may influence the design of future buildings there.

Lucien LaGrange had some unusual inspiration for the design of these two condominium towers.  He is said to have been inspired by the slow moving, twisting body forms of a couple dancing the tango.  It is this leaning, entwined shape that he wants to replicate and to do that, the towers of XO will be close at ground level and then gradually lean inwards somewhere towards the center.  This theme of dancers is even carried out in the usual height difference in partners, with one building standing at 34 stories and the other taller at 45 stories.  This design will make more than a few people look twice to make sure they aren't seeing an optical illusion.  This whole ambitious building project has been estimated to cost nearly $250 million dollars, but a good dance doesn't come cheap these days.

A key feature of this development is a two story building shared by the towers that will house what is being marketed as Spa XO.  The idea behind this creation is to make living at XO a total experience and lifestyle, not just the address you put on your mail.  With buyer's never ending appetite for luxury, demand for pampering and relaxation services, Spa XO may have something going here.  Finding an oasis in the middle of the city, not to mention in the middle of the building where you live, is bound to be a major selling point for many people shopping for a completely original, modern home.

Spa XO is far and above the usual spa you would expect to see in a luxury condo building in Chicago or anywhere else for that matter.  Plans call for a roof top sun deck, swimming pool, fully equipped fitness center, club house and theater room.  But that's standard in most condos.  The features that make XO something special are the Turkish steam baths, Finnish sauna, misting park, indoor waterfalls and an amazing 10,000 square foot botanical park.  Now those are things you don't normally see in a luxury condominium.  It is this approach to holistic living, to addressing the needs of both body, mind and spirit that Spa XO plans to satisfy.

When completed, XO will house some 487 total condo living units in both towers.  There is a jaw dropping total of  200 different floor plans from which to pick and in addition to that, even each floor is shaped differently because of the leaning design of the dancing buildings.  This combination of variables won’t produce the same home twice, giving buyers a custom living space that won’t be duplicated in the towers.  The condos will come with one bedroom, one bath to two bedroom, two bath and even three bedroom, three bath units.  Square feet of living space matches prices with 599' to 2,500' and $200,000 to $2 million.

Individual condos will have all the expected luxury details and finishes, but many of the materials used in creating these spaces was eco friendly, in keeping with the whole spa theme. Kitchens with stainless steel appliances, hardwood flooring, fine custom cabinets, granite and marble tops and trim on counter and vanity surfaces and wiring for Internet in condo rooms are just a few of the details.

XO in Chicago may have what at first appears to be a simple name, but a closer look at XO may make you realize how easy it is to fall in love, especially when treated to a slow dance in life.
