Motor Row Lofts

You don't have to be an automotive buff to appreciate the history of Motor Row. Running from Indiana to Wabash and then 22nd Street to 24th Place, this area of Chicago dates back to 1905 when the automotive industry was just gaining momentum after Ford colonized Detroit and then tackled Michigan Avenue. It is in this very spot that several landmark buildings are being reborn into luxury housing in the form of two developments; Motor Row Lofts and Motor Row Condos.

Motor Row Lofts are a three building conversion starting on 2301 South Michigan Avenue. Back in their prime, these buildings were used as a Cadillac display center, a Chevrolet dealership and an automotive repair shop. Motor Row Development Corporation is not only renovating the interiors but is preserving and restoring the original building facades and keeping the brick and terra cotta finish.

The Lofts will display the wood timbers from the original construction and exposed brick on the walls. Inside, ceilings stretch an amazing 13 to 21 feet to create a wide open feeling in the units. The expansive windows let in lots of natural sunlight which aids in energy savings and brightens up every room. The floors are made from a beautiful natural hardwood and the lofts come with a fireplace, an added luxury that isn't often standard. Kitchens are outfitted with a stainless steel appliance package ready and waiting for the cook in your family. Durable granite counter tops are not only attractive but make a great surface for food preparation and clean ups are a breeze. Every unit also has a handy washer and dryer hook up ready to go. And residents can go up to the roof top deck anytime to take in the fantastic view of the downtown skyline.

A total of 52 lofts will be available and you can pick from the 36 layouts offered. Units have one to two bedrooms with optional den and a selection of three bedroom units as well. Prices start at around $235,000 and top out somewhere in the neighborhood of $659,000. Garage parking is available but comes at an additional cost of from $25,000 to $35,000. Since the buildings are vintage and have been preserved, the national Register of Historic Places is planning on adding them to their list, which would in turn give residents a break on both property taxes. An eight year freeze on assessments would occur when this happens.

Motor Row Condos will take up the 2300 South Michigan Avenue spot and be the first newly constructed condos in that area. MR Michigan Avenue was designed by Fitzgerald Associates and developed by Rokas International. This new construction seven story building will house 94 units. The one bedroom condo prices will start at the low $200,000 mark and two bedroom condos will sell from the mid $300,000 price range. Square feet varies from 696 to 1,279 per condo. The facade of this building is meant to compliment that of Motor Row Lofts, which sits just across from MR Michigan Avenue (Motor Row Condos). The exterior is divided off into three brick sections to mimic the three brick loft buildings.

Interior finishes are top notch and include solid wood core doors for long lasting security, chrome knobs and hardware, hardwood flooring in the kitchen, living room, dining room, and hallways plus wall to wall Berber carpeting in the bedrooms. The exposed concrete ceilings on floors two through six have a nine foot height and on floor seven they measure ten feet. The windows stretch from floor to ceiling and are double pane glass, which is energy efficient and aids in heating and cooling costs. The condos have a stackable model washer and dryer and come pre-wired for high speed Internet and multiple telephones. Deeded garage parking runs $27,500 per space.

No matter whether you purchase a Motor Row Loft or a Motor Row Condo, you are buying more than a great home. You get to experience a bit of Chicago history, both the automotive side and the vitality of the South Loop with its diverse neighborhoods and vibrant buildings. You can roll back in time while you enjoy all the modern luxuries of a contemporary loft or condo.
